This American Landmark was erected in 1923 as a temporary advertisement for a local real estate development named "Hollywoodland." But In 1949 the residents called it an “eyesore” and wanted it removed. The Chamber of Commerce decided to keep it and take down the “Land” part instead…
In later decades the it fell in to disrepair, until 1978 when Hugh Hefner of Playboy and several other donors decided to rebuild it. Each letter represented a donor, for instance one of the “O,s” is dedicated to Rock Legend - Alice Cooper!
The Sign has a spooky past as well which includes the infamous suicide of Actress Peg Entwistle (pictured), who jumped to her death off the “H” in September of 1932. Even today, her Ghost is rumored to haunt the sign and nearby neighborhood… (Along with a ravenous pack of Wild Coyotes!)
