Capitol Reef got its name from the striking Navajo Sandstone rock formations which resemble the dome of the U.S. Capitol Building…and the term - Reef - meant a “natural barrier to crossing” to early pioneers and settlers.

The Fremont Culture existed between 600 -1300 AD, and were contemporaries of the Anasazi of the Four Corners area…
These Petroglyphs are easily observed off a sheer cliff that parallels Hwy 24 just east of the Visitor Center in Capitol Reef.
